Guest Host Kiernan Kelly of KiernanKelly.com fame and I discuss the recent announcement by Dorchester Publishing where they announced that as of October 2010, they were dropping their entire mass market publishing operation and changing to POD and e-book formats.
This historic action is the latest in a long line of events occurring since the recession hit and print publishers started feeling the burn before deciding to “legitimize” the e-book industry. First there was the debacle at Amazon over GLBT titles but we believed that to be more political than anything else. Following this was the launch of Carnia Press (a Harlequin E-book imprint run by Angela James, formerly of Samhain) and then Harlequin did the ultimate in sins.
They launched their own “pay us to publish your manuscript” line and planned to send rejected authors letters suggesting that while Harlequin wasn’t interested in treating them like real authors, they would be happy to take their money and publish their stories.
We’ll discuss the upcoming events at this year’s DragonCon held in Atlanta GA, from September 3rd – September 6th, what panels we’ll be seeing, what weird shit will go on and how I’ll never live down Zombie Bill even as I ponder Kiernan’s penis envy.
Don’t forget that we have a guest post from Mrs. Kelly up at http://www.writesex.net on Laughter as Lube!
